Phrases to Say When Declining Food….

So many of us want to eat healthy and nutritious foods yet, sometimes it can be hard for us to say no to tempting food placed in front of us! There are so many reasons people struggle to say no. You could be a recovering people pleaser who struggles to disappoint others or don’t want to cause a conflict. You have those of us who connect through food! We feel closer to people eating and enjoying the same things (now you may be thinking how weird I am)!!!!! You may want to be avoiding dairy or gluten due to an allergy or health reason and you want to share your needs to make sure you get what you need without offending someone! So, boundaries around food conversations can be very helpful and practical !

Here are some phrases you can say…

  • Thank you for offering, I am ok with what I am eating.

  • No thank you, I’m not hungry right now.

  • Wow, that looks amazing, but it is not for me.

  • I would love to enjoy that with you but I am focusing on a few health goals I have. Maybe in the future!

  • Thank you for offering, I would love to but I am not eating gluten and am avoiding sugars. I find that it helps me have more energy and feel better.

  • No thank you.

  • It looks so good, I am full right now but can you tell me about the recipe ?

  • I would love to, I am full right now but maybe next time!

  • No thank you. I have a ___ allergy and cannot have ____ or I will become sick.

  • No, I typically would love to share that with you. But the last time I did my tummy was not happy with me! I love sharing ___ food with you or going for a walk with you!

  • No, I am not eating that type of food right now. Thank you anyway, maybe in the future.

  • No thank you. But, would you like to cook or try _____ recipe with me?

I hope this is helpful ! It can be hard to say no especially when it comes to food or people feeding you! Believe me, coming from an Armenian family it’s a little bit of an obsession! But, on a serious note this can be a difficult thing to do. I hope some phrasing can help you stick to your goals, feel more energetic and happy with your choices!

Sincerely,

Alena
